Hi! My name is Carrie-Ellen Briere, and I work at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center and at the University of Connecticut. I knew I wanted to work in the NICU before I even knew I wanted to be a nurse! I have always loved babies and when I learned about the NICU I just knew that’s where I had to be. I started working in the NICU during nursing school, and transitioned into a nurse role immediately after graduation. I have been an “official” NICU Nurse for 5 years. I am excited to be a part of this blog because although I am a neonatal nurse, I am also a researcher and I am excited to share my perspectives with others. I started a BS to PhD program at the same time I started my full-time nursing career and I just graduated with my PhD in May 2014!
I am a NANN member because I believe it is critical to be connected to a quality organization in your area of nursing. NANN provides so many benefits to its members and I think every neonatal nurse should be a member of this organization. My first personal connection with NANN came when I attended the 2013 Research Summit and was able to meet some of the leaders and members at NANN who are also internationally recognized leaders in the NICU. Meeting these people inspired me to go to the 2013 NANN conference in Nashville, Tennessee where I was able to meet many more members. Meeting all of these people has really made this national organization feel so much more personal and has allowed for great connections across the country. It is so great to see a variety of perspectives on neonatal care that you won’t get unless you talk to people from all different areas.
In the next 5 years, I hope to become more involved with NANN. I also hope to grow my research career in the NICU, to help staff nurses implement evidence-based practice, and also become a professor. The patients and families I come in contact with in the NICU are my inspiration and I hope that I can make a small difference in the future of neonatal care!
